After School Program PicAfter School Asanas is the name of the Holistic Life Foundation's after school program. Now in its eighth year, After School Asanas is hosted at Robert W. Coleman Elementary School, after being piloted at Windsor Hills Elementary School in 2002, and then being hosted for 7 years at the Druid Hill YMCA. The program meets Monday through Thursday from 2:30PM to 5:30PM. The program serves male and female students ages 5 to 17, most living in the Southern Mondawmin and Sandtown/Winchester neighborhoods of Baltimore City. This multifaceted after school program has included tutoring and homework assistance, fitness and sports fundamentals training, yoga, environmental advocacy and education, and several other enrichment activities including creative writing, art, music, and civic engagement.

After School Programs PicStudents benefit in a vast number of ways through their participation in After School Asanas. Students participating in yoga learn asanas (yoga postures), pranayama (yoga breathing exercises), and meditation/centering. From their participation, students receive a great physical work out, learn peaceful conflict resolution skills, gain the ability to stay calm and centered, learn to manage their thoughts and emotions, and learn to stay focused when bothered with distractions. In the fitness and sports fundamentals portion of the program, students learn the basic fundamental sports skills as well as learning exercises and skills for overall fitness, developing teamwork and leadership skills, and building the foundation for leading a healthy lifestyle. Students learn about their interconnectedness to the entire world and not just their neighborhood in environmental education program. Learning the importance of stewardship, environmental justice and sustainability, students see how the environment impacts them and vice versa. Students also receive supplemental instruction in their core classes including math, language arts and science through home work assistance and one-on-one tutoring.

After School Programs PicAfter School Asanas maintains an average daily attendance of at least eight-five (85) percent. Students who have graduated out of the program into the Holistic Life Foundation Mentoring Program come back to volunteer as tutors and yoga instructors. The students planned and facilitated several community clean-ups, set up greening projects in their homes, and constructed a raised-bed vegetable garden on a vacant lot.
